Hoya Care

Light:

Do best in bright, indirect light.  A few feet away from an east facing window is ideal.  While some direct sun can "sun stress" the leaves into a deeper pink variegation, avoid long exposure to direct sunlight as it may scorch the leaves.

Watering:

Allow the soil to dry out completely before watering, and let excess water drain. Error on the side of under watering as Hoya are prone to root rot.

Humidity:

Hoya prefer a humidity over 60%, but adapt well to other levels

Soil and Fertilizer:

A soil free mix of coco chips, perlite, and orchid bark will keep the soil aerated and promote strong root growth. Fertilize in the spring/summer months every month with a half strength balanced liquid fertilizer.  In the fall and winter, fertilize every other month.

Temperature:

Maintain consistent temperatures between 65-75 degrees Fahrenheit.

Pruning and Blooming:

A climbing or trailing plant, Hoya Krimson Queen can be pruned to maintain size or given a trellis to climb.  Once it is matured (2-3 years) it can bloom, producing pale pink flowers with a dark pink center and have a slightly sweet scent to them.  Do not remove the peduncles (flower stalks), as Hoyas will often rebloom from the same spot.

Toxicity:

Hoyas are generally considered pet safe.
